Clicker or MarkerTraining For Dogs

How it Can Benefit You, Your Dog and Your Training.

This was our third try going over the 4 straight hurdles. There were two sets. The first set was in a straight row and the second positioned in a circle.  For some reason, Timba would stall, sit and look confused. The trainer we were working with offered to run the course with her. I was frustrated and completely grateful.

Their first try was successful.

“You are confusing her with your body language” said the trainer. “Your shoulders are leaning forward but you want both of you to turn – Your body language is not in tune with what you want”

Three Reasons We Have Difficulties Training Our Dog:

  • Most of us never trained a dog before. We have to learn dog training so we can teach our dogs to do what we expect of them.
  • Dogs are masters at reading body language
  • We are unaware of our own body language and can get quite inconsistent with our gestures and verbal clues

Two Ways Clicker/Marker Training Can Help You

  • You are going to learn consistency and send crystal clear messages
  • You are going to learn to observe your dog and give him feed back about his behavior

Clicker training can be very helpful for us because it teaches you to do the same action over and over again to get the same result. It also helps you to connect with your dog and learn to give feedback properly. Your dog is going to behave in a certain way and you are going to give him feed back … with a click.

How does it work?

clickerpets_2069_985045You can either use a little tool call a clicker or a verbal cue like Yes to reward a wanted behavior and follow with a treat. Over time the clicker and food reward will fade away. Proper timing is the most difficult part of clicker training.

Scientifically based, clicker training also called marker training was first used to train wild mammals such as dolphins, whales and tigers by professional trainers. And since these animals are large and wild, you can’t exactly force them to behave the way you wish. You have to find a way to communicate and create a dialogue to get the behavior you want.

When I was first introduced to clicker training, I was fascinated. I found it both intriguing but it seemed complicated at the same time. We were starting beginner agility training with Timba. While I would not recommend learning agility and clicker training simultaneously to anyone, it did help me to do the following:

  • Learn to give feedback to my dog by using a word, Yes for example, when she did something right.
  • Be more consistent with my body language
  • Learned to observe her body language

Since Karen Prior adapted clicker training in the dog training scene, the technique has evolved and it is now a lot easier to learn this it. More and more dog owners looking for positive, effective training are using this incredible training method and get outstanding results with it.

The Benefits of Clicker Training Are Many:

  • Give your dog a clear picture of what you want
  • Keep your dog’s mind active – Makes your dog think and solve problems rather than just to guess what you want
  • Keep your dog spirit alive – Often with dominance based training, the dog looses its ability to think and its personality can be affected
  • Built confidence in your dog

The result of Clicker Training

  • You will build trust and a mutual respect between the two of you.
  • Your dog is obedient to your commands and you are confident in your dog’s responses.
  • Connect you and your dog so you can work together as a team and establish a relationship.
  • Your well behave companion is welcome everywhere and pleasant to take around.
