Dog Grooming – Help with Shedding

When Your Dog Sheds

I do not know about you but I am finding dog hair everywhere right now. It does not matter how much I sweep or vacuum, “fur bunnies” have invaded my home.
Dogs that shed a lot do so usually twice a year. In the spring and in the fall. You cannot stop the shedding. It is a natural process but you can reduce the length of the shedding season by applying some a of the following tips.

5 Tips to Reduce the Amount of Fur Your Dog is Leaving Behind!

1 – Brush more often

Brushing your dog regularly from head to tail with a good brush wil help remove the dead hair.
When you use a brush like the furminator you also remove the undercoat that you dog has put on during the winter. It does make a difference and you might be amazed at how much fur comes out of your dog! No worries there is more.
A good brushing stimulates the skin and like a massage will enhance the blood flow and promote good health.

2 – Use a horse shedding blade

It is a blade and it cuts the loose hair. It was at first used on horses to remove the sweat after a run or training session. It is very efficient to remove loose hair while the Furminator work on the undercoat. You can find it in a tack store or look on Amazon for the best pricing.

3 – Bath with a good dog shampoo and conditioner

I know some people that use baby shampoo or dish soap to bath their dog. It’s not a great idea to do so. Dog’s skin has a different Ph than human and human shampoo or any other soap will disrupt the Ph of the skin and can create allergies, skin irritation, excess oil production (unpleasant smell) and other skin disorders.
Invest in a good  natural dog shampoo. There are usually highly concentrate and a little bit goes a long way.

4 – Vacuum your dog

I know it might sound weird but It works. It does not work with every dog so you really have to be careful before you do this.
Timba is terrified of the vacuum cleaner so I would not even think of trying. However I found out that Bear loves it and it works wonders.

5 – Diet … Diet … Diet

Most dogs shed, there is no way around it. But a good diet will reduce  the amount and length of shedding.
I have found that adding fish oil supplement in the food  also help keep the dog’s coat shinier and healthier.
I also add canned salmon or sardines to their food. I purchase it in supermarkets when there is a case lot sale.
Special Note
DO NOT SHAVE Your Dog – Some friend of mine have a Malamute and did not know how to deal with the shedding and the dog being to hot so they shaved her! – That was a disaster. The fur protects against sun burn, insect bites and other criters and shaving is not going to help the dog shedding less or be cooler.
If your dog requires a hair cut (poodles, some terriers, etc..), please take him to a professional groomer unless you really know what you are doing..
