Five Steps to Keep Fido fit and Get your Waistline Back

by dogconnections on January 15, 2010

If Buster is a little to chubby, it might affects his health. Same with us. Carrying to much weight around is a health hazard for people and dogs (.. cats too by the way). But dieting is not fun for anyone and same goes for our dogs. So here are a few steps you can take to have both you and Buster in shape in no time… and let’s keep it that way.

1 – Diet: Stay Away from Lite Foods, Low Fat foods and Pills  …. for You and Your dog.

I know the advertising sound great and promises. It looks easier to pop up a pill or use reduce fat foods but most have side effects, a lot of processed ingredients or are simply not a balanced diet at all.
The good thing about you dog, is that he will go along with you, will not argue and is truly the best partner to help you loose weight. For most of dogs and people, a small change in the diet and an increase in the daily exercise alone will help slim down.
The key here is to load up with food full of fiber, reduce the intake of processed food and control how much you eat. Processed foods contain a lot of hidden sugar, instead get some fruits and vegetables, fresh and ready to it.  4 to 5 small meals a day are better than 2 big ones. it is also easier to control hunger and craving.
For Buster, cut down in treats such as milk bones and high fat cookies. Replace with carrot sticks, apple slices or no grain cookies. Feed twice a day instead of a huge dinner portion.
And …. Get Moving!
Increase your activity will boost your metabolisme, increase the flow of oxygen an affect your overall well being. More energetic and more relaxed both you  and your dog will enjoy a better state of health.

2 – Walks, Walks, Walks …. Never Enough!

Most dogs live for walks and are eager to get going. Keep in mind that dogs do not walk in a straight line. They need to sniff and check things out. For them it is part of the walk. If you can go to an off leash trail, the better. But if you cannot or your dog is not good off leash, use a 10 feet long leash. It will give him more freedom and will be a lot easier on you.
If your dog is not good with the recall, it might be a good time to brush up with some training.
It is pretty easy to find an online dog training course to suit your needs.

3 – Hiking at Least Once a Week

I look at hiking as being a little bit more of a challenging and longer walk. Going up hill for example. A good couple of hours hiking will live both you and Buster relaxed and healthier.

4 – Aerobic Exercises … Your Dog will Love You For It

Jogging and biking are great exercises for both of you. Remember that Buster cushions under his paws are sensitive. Stay on soft ground. It is also much better for both of your joints.
Swimmer in the summer is one of the best exercise because it is non weight bearing. Great for older dogs, puppies or any dogs with joints or arthritis issues.
Fetch or Frisbee are game you can play with your dog. It is a great exercise when you do not have time for a walk or hike.

5 – Agility or Dancing  …. Getting into Sport.

The neat thing about any sport is that it stimulates your dog’s brain and get the two of you more connected. When playing sport together, you both to pay close attention to each other body language. A great way to get in shape and get to know each other better.
You can find tons of dog training tips to get a more obedient dog but in my opinion nothing happen with training unless you are truly connected with each other and you understand your dog’s body language.
Sport will help you achieve that and get a better, more reliable dog you will have a lot of fun with.
