There are many testimonials and experiences in circulation today concerning the use of pesticide based flea treatments vs. a natural approach that could be just as effective, if not more so. To fully appreciate the story that follows, it should first be first explained how many chemical solutions for flea and tick control work on our pets to accomplish the task of eliminating the unwanted pests..
Here is a basic overview of how spot drop flea and tick products work…
The ingredients in a spot drop flea control product move around your dog’s coat by several processes including diffusion and capillary action, and transfer from hair to hair as the pet moves.” That may lead you to believe that it remains on your dog’s coat, therefore it’s safe for your dog. The truth is these harmful chemicals are absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream. That is also how transdermal patches work – they use the skin as a way to enter the body.
The main active ingredient in spot products is a pesticide known as permethrin. (it is used in more than 18 similar spot treatment products) It kills insects by paralyzing their nervous system (that is also how nerve gas works). However, it cannot distinguish between an insect’s nervous system, a dog’s nervous system, or a human’s nervous system. That is why it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
With that said, we can move on to the story we also wish to express here. That is to explain how we came to promote the use of cedar oil as an alternative to chemical based products commonly used for flea and tick control often used today. A bit over two years ago, co-founder Rich Dressler aquired his latest best friend, a German Sheppard puppy soon to be known as “Sport”.
As Rich went about bringing up and getting to know his new puppy, much was to be learned about his new best friend. Fortunately Rich was well prepared for the undertaking as his profession would dictate. As owner/operator of Tacketts Professional Dog Training in Orange, California, he was very confident that the two of them would get along very well in no time. About six months ago it was discovered that Sport was alergic to the saliva of fleas. This presented an unexpected challenge in order for Rich to properly look after Sport’s well being.
Considering how spot drops work as explained above, it was immediately obvious that an alternative method of flea control for Sport was not only preferable, but in fact an absolute necessity. The damage of a flea bite to Sport’s system would have already been done if relying on chemical treatments. In order for spot drops to be effective, the flea must actually bite before the permethrin chemical can get to the flea, thus exposing Sport to the flea’s saliva.
With a little research, Rich decided to experiment with cedar oil to solve the problem which proved succesfull. It wasn’t until a subsequent conversation with a lifelong friend that the idea to offer these products online was conceived. So, another challenge was to learn the basics of offering an online platform from which to help spread the word about cedar oil. Eventually, the Dr. Ben’s formula that is featured was the product of choice for both Sport and our new endeavor as well.
It is our view that any comprehensive control program must also address the idea that perhaps the best way to insure that fleas do not become a large problem in the first place is to put them in check before they get near your pet in the first place. That is why we chose to offer products for indoor and outdoor pest control as well as the specific pet applications.
This way we feel we extend the best possible program for keeping harmfull pests out of your pets environment – and doing so naturally. We even recommend for instance treating the inside of your car with cedar oil formulas in cases where your pet frequently rides along. Fleas love to hide out in carpet and furniture whether in the car home. Thus the creatures will lie in wait for your unsuspecting pet to come along and certainly become their prey.
