Happy Dog Photo Contest and How to Take Great Pictures of Your Dog

1- Get a Good Quality Camera

You do not need the state of the art camera but a good quality one will help you get the best pictures. Digital cameras have really come down in prices and the best place to do your research is Amazon.com. The review section is great and give you informative insights about the pros and cons of each model.
A quick tip I learn the hard way: Make sure the software is compatible with your computer and simple to use.

2 – See the World from Your Dog’s Level

To make great pictures you have to get down at eye level with your dog. Sit down on the floor or kneel down. This way you avoid “the over the top” look and keep everything in proportion. Take the picture fairly close. Even big dogs are small and they can look “lost” in the rest of the scenery. If you are staging the scene, keep the background simple so your dog is the focus of the picture

3 – Take a Lot of Them

You never know which one is going to be your best shot so take a lot of pictures. You can always pick and choose afterwards.

4 – Get Your Dog Use to the Camera

This is really important because dogs can have different reactions to an unfamiliar object. Some dogs can be camera shy and will walk away or turn their head away. Others are curious and will walk up to you, lick the lens and try to play. Take your camera out and make sure your dog is comfortable around the camera. Let him sniff and “have a look”.  Since he can’t eat it or play with it he will quickly loose interest in the object.
Avoid the use of a flash, it can really spook your dog and give a greenish or white color to the eyes. It is best to take your pictures in natural light morning or late afternoon.

5 – Engage Your Dog

The use of treats, toys and play work well to engage your dog and get him to either stay still or do something specific. Make it look like fun and your dog will more likely “play along”.

6 – Always be Ready

Digital camera are so small and they easily fit in your pocket or purse. So keep it with you all the time and always be ready. You never know when your dog is going to do something cute, silly or funny.
