When you want to solve problems and alter behaviour you need to understand where your dog is coming from first.
Your dog either operates from his front or hind brain.
When your dog operate from his hind brain you get an “instinct response” – He reacts with no thoughts behind it. Chasing, reacting to another dog, pulling on the leash, excessive barking and so on.
When your dog operates from his front brainĀ – He is thinking. He is in a totally different mind set. This is where you can teach him things like commands, new behaviour and tricks. This is also when you have a well behave dog.
When you are working on solving problems and transforming behaviour, you need to move your dog from his hind brain to his front brain. You need to make him think.
How does it work?
In the car. Let’s say your dog gets really excited when you go for a walk or to the dog park. He drives you and himself crazy. He is in his hind brain. You cannot teach him anything right now.
What you can do:
1- Your own behaviour will affect your dog’s response. Stay calm and speak very slowly. Do not speak too much. Watch your breathing. Long deep breaths will help you stay centered. Your dog will sense that and start relaxing.
2 – Get your dog to lay down, get him to hold on to his favorite toy. Remain firm and calm. Watch his body relaxing.
Now that your dog is in the right mind set, he can get out of the car.
In the house: Your dog goes crazy when you get ready to go on a walk. You grab the leash and he cannot contained himself.
What can you do
1 – Be prepared, stay calm and do not speak too much
2 – Get your dog to sit and do a few tricks: give 5, shake a paw, get him to do something that will make him think. When he calms down and relax, clip the leash and off you go. You might have to repeat the process a few times.
When your dog operates from his front brain, he is thoughtful and receptive to new learning. When he operates from his hind brain, he is reactive, fearful, excited and out of control.
As a dog owner, your attitude plays an important role in your dog s response. When you are calm and assertive, you help your dog becoming a better citizen.
